Session A: Solar Cycle Variations of Solar and Heliospheric Parameters/Structures
Chairs: Alysha Reinard, Dave Webb
Extensive observations in conjunction with advances in theoretical and numerical modeling made over the last few solar cycles now enable a more interdisciplinary, systems view of the origins and impacts of solar cycle variations. This splinter session will focus on long-term, solar-cycle time scales and attempting to understand the degree and nature of variations within and between solar minimum and maximum states. One aspect is to try to characterize the system at its most basic, "ground state", and solar minimum is the time of lowest solar activity and simplest heliospheric structure. Is there a fundamental physical difference in solar wind structures as the cycle goes through its phases, or are minimum conditions just weak versions of maximum conditions? In terms of quasi-steady and transient structures in the solar wind, how can we characterize such structures and their impacts, and do we expect them to change over future cycles? We are also interested in longer time scales. Solar activity in the past few decades, and during most of the spacecraft era, has been relatively high compared to the past millennium. Are we passing from a Grand Maximum to a Grand Minimum, and what are the implications for solar wind measurements?
In this session, we solicit contributions addressing these (and other) questions based on recent developments in understanding solar cycle variations of both transient and quasi-steady parameters and structures. We would like to keep the oral contributions short, ~1-3 slides, to allow time for discussion. Those interested in presenting in this session, please contact the session organizers, Alysha.Reinard@noaa.gov and David.Webb@bc.edu, by the end of July.
I plan to attend this session.
